The N-400 Application for Naturalization is the official form used by United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to assess a person’s eligibility for naturalization, which is the process of becoming a U.S. citizen. An individual who meets the basic requirements will fill out Form N-400, submit it to USCIS with all the required documents, and attend an interview at a local USCIS office
Naturalization typically requires applicants to demonstrate that they have resided in the U.S. as Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) for at least five years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen). Additionally, they must be able to demonstrate “good moral character” and pass a test on US history and government (civics). During the interview, applicants are asked questions about their background information, including questions about their children, prior arrests or convictions, family contacts outside the US, travel history, etc. The interviewer also administers an English language test and asks applicants several questions from the civics test portion of Form N-400 in English.
